Following the news from Lithuania
Provided by AGPForeign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said preserving historical memory remains a key priority for Russia, arguing that some Western governments and institutions are increasingly promoting interpretations of history that diminish the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Nazi Germany.
Russia has long maintained that the Soviet contribution to the war has been unfairly minimized in parts of the West, emphasizing the enormous human losses suffered during what is referred to domestically as the Great Patriotic War.
Speaking before Victory Day commemorations, Zakharova claimed that what she described as revisionist tendencies are becoming more widespread among Western political institutions. She referenced voting patterns at the United Nations related to resolutions condemning the glorification of Nazism and associated extremist ideologies, noting that several Western countries opposed the measure.
Zakharova also accused European institutions of promoting what she called “historical aggression,” arguing that certain resolutions and political statements increasingly portray the Soviet Union as bearing significant responsibility for the outbreak of World War II alongside Nazi Germany.
In addition, she criticized the removal of Soviet-era war memorials in several Eastern European countries, claiming that monuments dedicated to those who fought against Nazism are being dismantled. She specifically mentioned Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia as examples of this trend.
The remarks reflect ongoing disputes between Russia and Western countries over historical interpretation, collective memory, and the political significance of World War II commemorations in contemporary international relations.
