Lithuanian President Criticizes Poland's Border Checks

(MENAFN) Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has voiced strong disapproval of Poland’s recent move to implement border checks with both Lithuania and Germany, labeling the action a "capitulation" in the face of irregular migration, according to a national public broadcaster.

During a press conference held in Vilnius on Sunday alongside German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Nauseda acknowledged that internal border controls within the Schengen zone often reflect deeper, ongoing challenges. Nevertheless, he emphasized that such steps should be strictly provisional.

“We can all probably agree that internal controls in the Schengen area reflect accumulated problems that we believe cannot be solved by other means.

However, such measures must undoubtedly be temporary and must achieve results as quickly as possible and be terminated,” Nauseda stated.

He further argued that Warsaw’s move to begin inspections on Monday night underscores the broader difficulties faced in securing the European Union’s outer borders.

According to Nauseda, efforts must be intensified to resolve the root causes, and any actions that deviate from the EU’s foundational principles should be phased out promptly.

“But we must strive to do that and we must abandon as soon as possible those measures that are not characteristic of the European Union and which (…) represent a temporary capitulation to the problem,” he added.

Meanwhile, Steinmeier affirmed that Germany is actively collaborating with Poland to manage the ongoing migration concerns.
